The Best Gift You Could Leave Behind

We recently had the opportunity to visit with a lady on the 5th anniversary of her husband’s death. He had passed rather suddenly from an aggressive form of cancer, at an age when few of us are thinking about making our final arrangements. And yet, when she went though her husband’s papers shortly after his death, she found specific instructions on where he was to be buried, the type of service he wanted, the type of stone he wanted – everything. Five years later, she still gets misty talking about how even after death, he was trying to take care of his family and relieve them of some stress.

pre-planningThe fact is, few of us are comfortable thinking about our own passing. It’s easier to imagine ourselves living into a grand old age than to consider the possibility of an early accident or illness. And yet, accepting responsibility for the future can help us all rest easier in the knowledge that the burden will not fall on our families, and the arrangements will be made exactly the way we want.

At Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works, we encourage you to think about your final wishes, and talk them over with your loved ones. Stop by our store at 927 Pennsylvania Avenue and browse through the many options. We are always happy to answer questions, and can help you put together a sample design for your monument. You can even order the stone ahead of time and have it set in place, ready and waiting for the time of need.

When your day comes, your family will have enough on their mind. Saving them the strain of these decisions is one of the best gifts you could leave behind.

That Final Touch

clark-crossMemorial stones, like other items used in time of loss, are often chosen quickly by family members who are under emotional strain. When visiting a grave over the years, family members may begin to feel that the stone is too plain, or doesn’t do enough to celebrate the unique life it was meant to represent. Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works is your resource for adding engraving, re-cutting lettering, and many other options to enhance an existing stone. Much of our work can be done on site, meaning that your loved one’s stone need not be disturbed at all.

picture-026Whether you would like to add an emblem or design, a porcelain portrait, or a bronze sculptural element, we are happy to help. We match existing styles and fonts with our carvings, making your new additions look like they’ve been there all along. How Do You Do That?

We often have customers stop by our 927 Pennsylvania Avenue shop to explore their options. As they look through our samples of artfully carved and inscribed stone products, the question on many lips is, “do you do all this by hand?”

We offer our customers marble and granite options in a number of colors and patterns, which have been sourced from all over the world. In our showroom you can see and touch a variety of shapes and sizes, and compare the benefits of a “China Black,” “India Red,” “Dakota Mahogany” and many other colors side by side. You will also have the opportunity to sit down with our showroom staff and create your own design, choosing lettering and other components which will be engraved on your stone.

picture-016Once you have made your selection, our first step is to work with the stone supplier to obtain the blank stone in the color and shape of your choice. We then make a rubberized stencil, which will ensure the stone is engraved perfectly. In years past these stencils were laid out and hand-cut by experienced craftsman, but in more modern times we are able to transfer your design digitally from the computer-based design software directly to specialized stencil-cutting equipment in our shop. The stencil is applied carefully to the stone, and sandblasting equipment is used to precisely engrave your lettering and other decorative components into the stone. The more involved designs are done in our workshop, but we also have mobile equipment which can be used to engrave final dates or simple elements to an existing stone on site.

In the end, your stone has been crafted with modern techniques and traditional excellence to present an ageless look. We are committed to crafting a high quality monument which will celebrate your loved one’s life in exactly the way you want. Stop by the Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works shop any time to explore the possibilities.

In Memorandum: Amy Krueger

Part of our role at Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works is to listen to stories. People come in to tell us about their loved one, how they lived and what made them special. In return, we try to help them capture those special qualities in a memorial stone. We’d like to share one of those stories with you.

Amy Krueger was a hometown girl from Kiel, who liked country music and playing softball. She enlisted in the Army the day after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In November of 2009, she was training with Army Reserve’s 467th Medical Detachment at Fort Hood in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan when she and a dozen of her fellow soldiers were gunned down in the infamous attack. She was 29.

kruegsHow do you memorialize a friend and team mate who was cut down in her youth by a deranged gunman? The Sheboygan Softball Association asked us to try. Working together, we designed the monument which now sits proudly at the base of the flag at the ball park. It incorporates an image of Amy proudly wearing her softball uniform, recognizes her military service and incredible sacrifice, and pledges that she will never be forgotten by the many whose lives she touched.

We are proud to serve the families and friends of American heroes, whether celebrated or unsung. Stop by our shop and tell us about your hero.

Hmong Memorial Project

img_0515

As Memorial Day approaches, Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works would like to recognize one segment of our local veteran population and highlight the memorial created in their honor. Eastern Wisconsin has welcomed a large number of Hmong immigrants in the decades since the Vietnam war, families with primarily farming backgrounds who fought for the US in the war and had to flee as a result. These families enrich the diversity of our community, but their contribution to the war effort often went unrecognized. The Hmong Mutual Assistance Association of Sheboygan is dedicated to changing that, and invited Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works to be a part of their ongoing project.

In the most recent phase of the Hmong Memorial construction project, we were asked to transform an open grassy space at the center of the monument into an artistic concrete design inspired by Hmong textile arts. This process began with the addition of drains through the existing walkway, which remove the runoff water which previously was allowed to soak into the grass.  Next we applied sealer and a base color to the concrete, guarding it carefully against the changeable Wisconsin Spring weather because the sealant would not set up properly if the concrete became too cold.  A custom-cut stencil measuring 12′ across became a 24 piece jigsaw puzzle, and was carefully installed on site.   The concrete was etched with a sand-blaster to make the design permanent, and a contrasting sealant was applied to highlight the work. Finally, the stencil carefully removed.

The end result is a beautiful monument which honors the lives and sacrifices of the Hmong recruits with a unique and memorable design.  At Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works, this is our goal with every project of every size: to create beautiful monuments for everlasting memories. Let us help you with yours.

Thinking of Mother

Mother’s Day is almost upon us again. Small children are stringing macaroni necklaces and painting rock paperweights, teen siblings are pooling resources and considering options, and grocery stores are stocking up on orchids; but for those who have lost their mother, the day has a special poignancy. It is incredibly difficult to let go of the one who seemed to always have the answers and an inexhaustable supply of love and support.

loveis3501

At Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works, we can help you find ways to commemorate your mother and grandmother – not only on Mother’s Day, but on every day of the year. We can inscribe her favorite verse on a stone for your garden or home. We can provide you with a beautiful hand-etched vase to hold your floral tributes, or a solar powered vigil light to shine in her honor. Your favorite photo can be transformed into a ceramic portrait and inlaid in a dedication stone next to the tree you planted in her honor. With our endless custom options, we can help you express your feelings in a thousand different ways.

On Mother’s Day and every other day, let us help you pay tribute to the one who gave you so much. Stop by our Pennsylvania Avenue shop to see some options and design something truly unique.

Anyone who doesn’t miss the past never had a mother.

Memorial Blooms

As the days warm and spring buds begin to peek out of the earth, we start to see more visitors in the local cemeteries. Family members are starting to clean up last year’s faded silks or dry stems, check monuments over for winter damage, and plant fresh flowers around graves. They will trickle in over the next few weeks in one’s and two’s, carrying their trowels and flats of deer-resistant flowers, ready to prepare their family plots for another spring. But inevitably, a few stones will be left untended – the ones with family members too distant or too over-committed for spring preparations.cemetery-flower

At Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works, we understand how busy life can be and how cemetery visits can slide to the bottom of your to do list. Whether or not your stone was designed in our shop, our garden staff are happy to step in and accent it with your choice of flowers and other plants. We check the cemetery’s guidelines for the types of displays permitted and personally select the plants you request. After the gardening is done, we will provide you with photos of the grave and its newly enhanced surroundings. We can even schedule a succession of plantings over the year, ranging from spring bulbs to a Fall tribute of long-lasting silk flowers.

Don’t let the challenges to your time and attention prevent a Spring floral tribute. Call Sheboygan Monument & Stone Works today to discuss your cemetery planting needs, and how we can help you memorialize your loved one in living color.
